Tories urged to come clean over travellers site

January 19, 2009 11:15 AM

Liberal Democrat Councillors in Hinckley & Bosworth have thrown down the gauntlet to Conservative Councillors to spell out where they believe the 39 remaining gypsy & travellers pitches should go.

Lib Dem Exec member for Regeneration Cllr Stuart Bray said, "The Borough Council is being forced to allocate 42 travellers pitches by a combination of the Conservative dominated Regional Assembly and the Government. 3 of these have already been given permission at Higham so we have to find 39 more. Instead of scaremongering and carping from the sidelines we urge the Conservative group to tell us where they believe these pitches should go so we can enter into a sensible debate.

"The most frustrating thing about this whole episode is that these same Conservative councillors who are now taking cheap political pot shots at the Council are the same Conservatives who sat idly by in Regional Assembly and allowed our area to get a rough deal. Residents in Hinckley & Bosworth should be left in no doubt we are finding ourselves in this unenviable situation because certain Conservative councillors have tried to put their own short term electoral prospects over the best interests of the Borough as a whole."
