Liberal Democrats slam Conservative hypocrisy over travellers

February 12, 2009 3:54 PM

Liberal Democrat Deputy Leader Cllr Stuart Bray has today released the minutes of the last cabinet meeting of the former Conservative administration where it was agreed to accept the findings of the Gypsy & Travellers need assessment which allocated more travellers sites to the area than was originally planned.

Cllr Bray said, "The Conservatives have been desperately trying to attack the Liberal Democrats for having to allocate 42 permanent pitches and a transit site when all along it was their administration who agreed the figures.

"Their hypocrisy is breathtaking. They are deliberately trying to mislead people and cause concerns over a situation which was their making. They cannot even claim that it was down to councillors who lost their seats in the elections - two of the councillors who spoke in the debate at last months Council meeting were members of the cabinet and attended the meeting - including their current leader.

"I have asked that a copy of these minutes be circulated to all members of the Council so nobody can be left in any doubt who is to blame for this current situation. In the mean time I will be stepping up my campaign to try and persuade the powers that be to reduce the number we have to allocate before this comes back before the Council in the summer."
