Good news for Hinckley and Bosworth Council Tenants

September 4, 2009 12:00 AM

Liberal Democrat led Hinckley and Bosworth Borough Council has been one of a number of local authorities which have successfully persuaded the government to reduce the planned rise in council house rents by half this year.

Under a complicated subsidy scheme devised by the Labour government, rents in the Borough were due to rise by an average of 7 per cent.

However, following protests by a number of local authorities, including Hinckley and Bosworth Borough Council, and a campaign against the rent rises by Liberal Democrats the government has been forced to amend its subsidy scheme to reduce the level of increases. As a result, council house rents in Hinckley and Bosworth will now only rise by an average of 3.5 per cent. The rise will be implemented immediately.

Council Leader David Bill said: "We have been urging the Labour government to end this rent rises and I am delighted that finally common sense has broken through. It would have been ridiculous to introduce a rise of 7 per cent in the current economic climate."
