Liberal Democrat issues rallying cry to save Hinckley's services

February 26, 2010 8:35 AM

A packed meeting at the Westfield Community Centre in Hinckley this afternoon, heard a leading local Liberal Democrats issue a call to save Hinckley and Bosworth's local services.

Michael Mullaney, Liberal Democrat parliamentary candidate for Bosworth, was one of the speakers, along with others including Dave Roberts from the Westfield Community Centre and speakers from Unison who spoke against plans to cut Hinckley's services.

At the meeting Michael Mullaney said "We have a great challenge today. We have to try to save Hinckley and the surrounding area from one of the most devastating set of cuts our area has ever seen.

"The Conservative County Council wants to slash our local services. They have put together a list of cuts a mile long

"Community centres like the one we are in today facing closure because of grant cuts.

"Care homes such as the Limes in Hinckley and Harvey House in Barwell threatened with closure if the Tory county council cant sell them off and they haven't managed to all the other times they have tried to sell them.

"Pensioners and disabled people who receive care facing having their care removed if they are only considered to have "moderate" needs.

"Bus services, including school buses, facing cut backs.

"These cuts will have a devastating effect on our community and in particular some of the most vulnerable members of the community.

"This meeting, this afternoon, is sending out a message to the County Council, leave our services alone. Hands off Westfield Community Centre, hands off our care homes, hands off our bus services and all our other services."
