Composting site plans stopped

December 15, 2011 9:52 PM

Campaigners have welcomed news that controversial plans for a composting site between Fenny Drayton and Higham on the Hill have been stopped.

This afternoon Leicestershire County Council's planning committee threw out the composting site plans.

Local Liberal Democrat campaigners Cllrs Bill Crooks and Michael Mullaney, who organised a petition which gathered support from hundreds of residents against the composting site, welcomed the news.

Cllr Michael Mullaney, the Lib Dems parliamentary spokesman said "I'm glad that the planning committee has listened to the views of local people and stopped the composting site. The planned location was the wrong place to put it, it would have put more lorries on already overstretched local roads."

"This is the third time plans for a composting site in that area have been rejected. Now that they have been voted down by the County Council planning committee twice, rejected by a government inspector and opposed by the Borough Council hopefully this will finally finish off plans for the composting site."
Cllr Bill Crooks Lib Dem rural affairs spokesman said "A big thank you to everyone in Fenny Drayton, Higham on the Hill, Atterton Upton and other local villages who signed our petition.

"The huge response from local people really helped to stop the composting site."
