At Wednesday's County Council meeting Lib Dems raised the plight of WASPI (Women Against State Pension Inequality) women. The women, born in the 1950s found their retirement age raised by the government, without adequate notice to be able to fund their retirement, leaving many of the WASPI women facing financial hardship.

Speaking at the meeting Hinckley De Montfort County Councillor Michael Mullaney said "Thousands of WASPI women have been unfairly treated, it is only right that the government takes the measures to deliver them the fair deal they deserve. Over 140 Councils across the country including Rutland, Leicester City and Oadby and Wigston have signed up to support the WASPI campaign.

"I hope that Leicestershire County Council can do the same. The Conservative Cabinet who run the County Council will be debating the subject at a future meeting. I hope they will agree to sign up to the WASPI pledge and support all those Leicestershire women who have been unfairly hurt by the changes to their retirement age, a change that took place without giving them proper warning and notice."

"In November a motion put to the County Council by my colleague Linda Broadley and myself was voted down by the County Council's Conservative leadership. Since then the Conservatives have admitted they were wrong I hope they will now sign Leicestershire up to support the WASPI campaign.

Simon Galton Leader of Leicestershire Lib Dem Councillors said "It was extremely disappointing that Leicestershire conservatives voted against a motion in December to support the WASPI campaign. I welcome the change of stance in a statement made this week but they now need to back up their words by voting to commit the Council to support the campaign."
