Local Lib Dem campaigners have collected 2500 petitions to save cheques

Two and a half thousand people in Hinckley and Bosworth have signed a petition to save the cheque. The petition, organised by local Liberal Democrats, has been posted to the Prime Minister.

The petitions from Hinckley and Bosworth will join 10,000s that have been collected by campaigners across the country.

Cllr Stuart Bray, leader of Hinckley and Bosworth council said, "The banks received billions of pounds in bailouts from the taxpayers. There is real anger that the banks, with their plan to scrap cheques, are ignoring the needs of many small businesses, community groups and vulnerable people.

"It's time the banks listened to the taxpayers, who are their customers, and accept that there is a need to keep cheques."

Michael Mullaney, Liberal Democrat parliamentary spokesman for Hinckley and Bosworth said "The response has been amazing. People have been really keen to save the cheque. "I hope the government will listen to the people who signed the petition and back a new law to force the banks to keep issuing cheques."
