Anger at delay in fairer funding review raised at County Council
News that the government is to delay its fair funding review for local councils for another year until 2021/22 was met with anger at the recent Leicestershire County Council's full council meeeting.
Councillor Michael Mullaney, Leicestershire Lib Dem finance spokesman raised the issue at the meeting. Michael Mullaney said "At present Leicestershire gets one of the worst deals from this Tory government. As we are one of the worst funded local government areas this means local residents have to put up with a double whammy of service cuts and council tax rises.
"We have seen vital services like Sure Start Children's Centres close and some rural bus services under threat of being scrapped, at the same time the County Council continues to increase people's Council Tax bills.
"It's extremly disappointing that the Conservative government has delayed for another year the fair funding review that might have helped get fairer funding for our area. This decision by the Conservative government means another year of residents getting a raw deal of service cuts and Council Tax rises.
"Local people in Leicestershire deserve better. It's time the Tory government stopped neglecting our area and started giving us the funding for local services our area desperately needs."
