Big response to bank petition in Hinckley town centre

9 Dec 2021

A petition run on Hinckley market place got a big response on Saturday. Hundreds of people signed a petition calling on the government to provide more powers to the Financial Conduct Authority, to prevent the banks carrying out further mass branch closures.

Helping to run the stall was Hinckley Councillor Michael Mullaney. Michael said "Thanks to everyone who signed the petition, we had a fantastic response. People were furious that the banks are carrying out largescale bank closures, when so many people are not able or comfortable with internet banking.

"Following the closure of Halifax and Santander branches in Hinckley recently there was a determination not to see more bank branches being lost.

"I hope the government will give the FCA the powers to prevent further mass bank branch closures. This is particularly relevant with TSB recent announcement of their plans to close 70 more bank branches.

Helping on the stall were a range of people including Councillors Linda Mullaney, Michael Mullaney, Dawn Glenville, Barry Walker and Ann Pendlebury.

Hinckley Councillor Ann Pendlebury said "People in Hinckley are clearly saying no to anymore bank branch closures. Enough is enough, many people still need places where they can carry out in person banking."
