Bosworth Councillor and Parliamentary candidate Michael Mullaney calls for real "Recall" of MPs
Local Councillor and Liberal Democrat parliamentary candidate for Bosworth Michael Mullaney is urging MPs to support the full power of recall for MPs.
Today (Tuesday 21 October) Parliament will vote on a new law to "Recall" those "bad apple" MPs from parliament who have done wrong and force them to face a public vote in a by-election.
Currently the government proposals for recall of MPs would involve a by-election being forced if an MP was jailed for up to 12 months or if they were engaged in "serious wrongdoing" that meant they were suspended from the House of Commons for 21 days.
Michael Mullaney said "This does not go far enough. It gives the power of recall to MPs rather than to the public. I hope the Recall bill will be amended so that local people can force a by-election, if they believe their MP is seriously failing to represent them.
"Amendments from Zac Goldsmith MP would ensure a by-election if 20% of local voters sign a "Recall petition" calling for recall of their MP.
"David Cameron has hinted that the powers of "Recall could go further.
"I am calling upon our local MP David Tredinnick to support these stronger measures for the recall of MPs so that the public can have more power to get rid of bad apple MPs.
"I have also written to Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg asking him to support these amendments."
