Campaigners celebrate mast success

Campaigners against plans by Vodafone to put a 15 metre (49 ft) phone mast on Tudor Road, Hinckley are celebrating after the plans were rejected at a meeting of Hinckley and Bosworth Borough Council's Planning Committee last night.

Liberal Democrat Councillors David Bill, Dave Cope, Michael Mullaney and Don Wright collected a petition of nearly 200 names from local residents who opposed the phone mast.

Cllr Michael Mullaney (Lib Dem, Hinckley Trinity) spoke to the meeting and asked for the Mast to be stopped, he said "Phone masts are needed in the 21st Century, but they need to be in an appropriate place. This site on Tudor Road was totally the wrong place, not only was it in a residential area right in front of a local shop, but it was next to an existing nursing home on one side and a Care Home that is being built on the other side. It was also very near to Richmond School and the Hinckley Club for Young People."

Respondong to the news County Cllr Don Wright (Lib Dem, Hinckley) said "Thank goodness common sense has prevailed. This was the wrong site for a phone mast and I'm glad to see it was rejected."
