Local campaigners have welcomed the news that boundary changes that would have split up the Bosworth constituency have been dropped.

The Boundary Commission had proposed changes to the Bosworth constituency that would have led to Hinckley and Burbage being divided from one another and the splitting of Barwell from Earl Shilton.

The Boundary Commission's plans were voted down in the House of Commons last night.

Liberal Democrat parliamentary spokesman for Bosworth Cllr Michael Mullaney said"I'm delighted that common sense has prevailed and the Boundary Commissions plans had been voted down.

"The planned boundary changes for Bosworth were crazy. If the plans had gone through Hinckley and Burbage, which form a natural community, would have been split up. You would have had the houses on one side of Hinckley railway station remain in Bosworth and the houses on the other side of the railway station moved into Blaby.

"Efforts should be made to make constituencies a similar size, but any changes should respect community boundaries. These changes took no account of local community ties, they would have carved up our area, and I'm glad they have been stopped.

"I'm disappointed that our Conservative MP voted for the boundary changes that would have divided Hinckley from Burbage and Barwell from Earl Shilton."
