Cllr meets with members of St Mary's Church to support Christian Aid "If" campaign

Cllr Michael Mullaney recently met up with a group from the St Mary's Church Hinckley, to discuss and give his support to the Christian Aid "If" campaign.

In reponse to the discussion about the Christian Aid 'If' campaign, Michael Mullaney said "It was great to meet with people in Hinckley who are passionate about the need to tackle the problem of hunger and malnutrition that affects so many people in the world.


"I totally agree with the "If" campaign that Christian Aid is promoting to ensure that big companies operating in poorer countries are made to pay fair amounts of tax.


"It's horrific that 25,000 people a day, most of whom are children, die of hunger or hunger related diseases. Any steps that can stop that are urgently needed. I'm pleased that over a hundred people in the Hinckley area have signed the letter from St Mary's Church to David Cameron urging him to support this campaign."

David Cameron wrote to St Mary's Hinckley:
'Nearly a billion people around the world do not get enough food and under-nutritian holds back the growth and development of millions of children. This is simply not acceptable in 2013 and that is why I am welcoming the campaign to end global hunger......... the government has made a committment to the world's poorest people by confirming that the UK will spend 0.7% of Gross National Income on international development from 2013. We will be the first G8 country to do so ...... we will work to ensure all companies pay the taxes they owe.'

Rev'd John Whittaker of St Mary's Church said:
"We are so pleased that the campaign to support overseas aid and oppose tax evasion by multi national companies has been widely supported in Hinckley and has received such important assurances from the prime minister. Christianity teaches that we are to love our neighbour as we love ourselves and that our neighbour is both people near and people far away. This campaign is all about loving and caring for the poorest people in the world and we are proud to be part of it."
