Liberal Democrats want better local rail service

The price of rail tickets and a lack of car parking spaces were highlighted as major commuter concerns in a survey of train users carried out by a leading local Liberal Democrat.

Michael Mullaney, Liberal Democrat parliamentary spokesman for Hinckley and Bosworth carried out the survey of local commuters. Commenting, Michael Mullaney said, "As well as concerns about ticket prices and car parking spaces, a worrying one in six people said they did not feel safe in and around the railway station they travel from.

"If we are to improve public transport we need to ensure that adequate funding is made available along with a serious commitment to listen to the concerns of commuters.

"The Liberal Democrats are proposing investing billions of pounds to improve public transport, including more high speed rail lines and buses to help persuade commuters to use trains and buses. These plans received support from many local commuters.

"In contrast, twelve years after the Conservatives privatised the railways two-thirds of respondents still think rail privatisation was a bad thing."

The surveys were returned by residents of Hinckley and Bosworth who travel from Hinckley, Nuneaton and Leicester stations.
