Council throws its support behind cheque campaign

26 Feb 2011

Members of Hinckley and Bosworth council have unanimously supported a motion supporting keeping cheques.

The motion, submitted by the Liberal Democrat leader of the council Cllr Stuart Bray, calls on the Prime Minister to give his support to a parliamentary bill that would keep cheques.

It comes after thousands of people, across Hinckley and Bosworth, have supported a Liberal Democrat campaign, by signing a call for the Prime Minister to take action.

Cllr Bray said "Four million cheques are issued every day.

"Community groups, small businesses, pensioners and disabled people in particular will lose out if cheques are scrapped.

"I urge David Cameron to gives his support to the campaign to keep cheques. The Conservative Party often claims to be the party of business. On the future of cheques the Prime Minister has a choice. He can side with the bankers who helped get our country into the financial mess it's in, or he can side with the small businesses who we need to create the jobs to help get us out of the mess."
