Councillor calls for support for Leicestershire economy at national conference

27 Mar 2021

A Hinckley Councillor has spoken at a national party conference on the need for increased support for businesses and employees in Leicestershire as we emerge from Covid19 pandemic

Speaking in a debate on the economy at the national Liberal Democrat Conference Councillor Michael Mullaney said "Here in Leicestershire we have been hit by a local lockdown longer than anywhere else with Leicester having been under lockdown since way back in June 2020, with parts of Leicestershire county also having been hit by it. This will do damage to the economy of Leicester and Leicestershire as a whole and as we emerge from Covid19 it's important the Leicestershire economy is properly supported.

"In addition here in the Midlands we have the economies most heavily dependant on manufacturing in the country, with a higher percentage of people in the East and West Midlands working in manufacturing than any part of the country. It's essential that support for the economy of Leicestershire and the Midlands as a whole is a priority for the government.

"In addition we cannot forget the plight of the three million people nationally, including tens of thousands nationally who have been excluded from government support schemes, we need to keep pressing the government to give the excluded, often small business people, support too".
