Councillor meets cancer campaigners

Michael Mullaney said "Earlier this year I was happy to support Hinckley and Bosworth Council signing the Local Government Declaration on Tobacco Control, through which the council has agreed to undertake a range of measures, with its partners, to reduce the harm caused by smoking across the borough. Smoking still being one of the biggest causes of cancer.

"The meeting with Cancer Research UK was extremely useful. Figures provided to me by Cancer Research UK at the meeting found that 3,580 people are affected by cancer in Bosworth each year with 1,709 people in the area tragically dying from the disease.

"There have been major advances in the fight against cancer over the last 40 years. Two in four people diagnosed with cancer today in the UK will survive the disease for at least ten years, compared to just one in four in the early 1970s.

"Cancer Research's pioneering work into the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of cancer is helping to save millions of lives. It's vital that we continue to support their work and do everything we can to help beat cancer sooner.

"I am supporting Cancer Research UK's four point plan to help tackle cancer.

"Which is that the government should;

• Continue to support the UK's world leading cancer research infrastructure

• Set an aspiration for a tobacco-free society

• Renew efforts to promote earlier diagnosis of cancer

• Ensure all cancer patients can access the best, evidence based surgery, radiotherapy and chemotherapy treatments.
