Councillor Michael Mullaney secures policy change at Party Conference

Hinckley Liberal Democrat Councillor and parliamentary candidate for Bosworth Michael Mullaney secured a change in national party policy to help people get back to work.

In the Welfare Reform debate at the Liberal Democrat conference Michael Mullaney put forward an amendment which would give more support to job seekers to arrange their own work experience placements, to help them find the right placement in their area of interest, and to ensure that there is A Fairness Principle so that anyone who does work for their benefits receives the equivalent of minimum wage for their work.

In the debate Cllr Mullaney said "We should do all we can to get people back into work. Where jobseekers are looking for work experience we should be giving them more support to find work experience in their relevant field of interest and ensure that they are paid the minimum wage for any work they have to do.

"In Hinckley and Bosworth we are already having real success getting people back into work. Unemployment has gone down by a half in the last year and youth unemployment by more than a half. We have the Enterprise Zone at Mira, off the A5 near Hinckley delivered by Lib Dems in government which is bringing thousands of jobs to the area. The 1,000 jobs coming to DPD on Sketchley Brook and the new Hinckley town centre development of shops, cinema and restaurants bringing jobs locally.

"There is still more to do though and we should be giving the people still seeking work all the support we can to help them get back into work."
