A Leicestershire County Councillor has taken up the cause of fair funding for Leicestershire schools at a national conference.

Hinckley County Councillor Michael Mullaney spoke at the Liberal Democrat national conference about how Leicestershire has some of the lowest funded schools in the country.

Speaking at the conference Michael said "Children and young people in Leicestershire are unfairly missing out because our local schools are some of the worst funded by the government in the country.

"Not only that but Leicestershire County Council is the worst funded County Council in the country. This has meant that they are having to cut back on other support for local children and young people, such as closing 24 Children's Centres in the County and making cut backs to special education needs education and transport.

"It's no wonder then that according to the Social Mobility Commission's recent report my local Borough Hinckley and Bosworth has the tenth lowest level of social mobility in Britain. The cost of Leicestershire not getting its fair share of resources is local young people being denied their full opportunities to get on in life.

"Leicestershire is being starved of resources by the Conservative government, this means local children and young people are losing out. This is an outrage and must change. Its time the Conservative government delivered fair funding to local schools, to give all children and young people in our area the best chance in life."
