Councillor welcomes news on rail improvements

Hinckley Liberal Democrat Councillor Michael Mullaney has welcomed the announcement by the government that the Midland Mainline, which connects Leicester with Sheffield and London is to be improved.

The government has announced today that the railway line is to be electrified.

Michael Mullaney said "This is good news for those local residents who use this route. It will mean passengers can get to their destinations quicker and is good news for the environment as electric trains give off much less carbon dioxide than diesel trains. It will also be cheaper in the long run."

"Back in 2009 I helped to write a conference motion, passed by the East Midlands Liberal Democrat conference, which called on the then Labour government to electrify the East Midlands Mainline. I'm delighted that Liberal Democrats in coalition are now going to deliver on this project."
