Electrification of Midland main line backed

East Midlands Liberal Democrats held a successful conference in Leicester this weekend.

The packed conference was chaired by Hinckley and Bosworth's Liberal Democrat Parliamentary Spokesman Michael Mullaney.

Michael said "It was a really productive day. Particularly positive was the passing, with the overwhelming support of conference, of a motion I put together supporting the electrification of the Midland main line.

"This would improve rail journeys for local commuters who use that rail line through Leicester. Network Rail recently published a study which recommended electrification of the line and I hope the government will listen and make this improvement".

The wording of the motion passed was;

"Conference notes the recent report by Network Rail which supported the electrification of the Midland main line between Sheffield and London.

"Conference further notes that electric trains are faster, better for the environment and in the long run cheaper than ordinary trains.

"Conference resolves to support the electrification of the Midland main line."
