Government must listen to Doctors about prescription charges- Hinckley and Bosworth Liberal Democrats

6 Mar 2009

Local Liberal Democrats are calling on the government to listen to Doctors and abolish prescription charges in England.

The British Medical Association, which represents doctors, has called for the scrapping of prescription charges in England. Prescription charges have already been abolished in Wales and will be abolished in Northern Ireland next year and in Scotland in 2011.

Michael Mullaney, Liberal Democrat parliamentary spokesman for Bosworth said "The government should listen to doctors and axe prescription charges. People in Hinckley and Bosworth and the rest of England deserve to have free prescriptions like people in the rest of the UK.

"Doctors are saying that scrapping all charges could reduce hospital admissions because people would take their prescription medicines and that it may help patients return to work more quickly following illness.

"This would not only improve people's healthcare but would also save money in the long term."
