Hinckley and Bosworth Council calls for Prime Minister to go

Hinckley and Bosworth Borough Council has passed a motion tonight calling for the Prime Minister to resign.

Proposing the motion Hinckley Liberal Democrat Councillor Michael Mullaney said "People from all political parties and none have called for the Prime Minister to resign. This includes the Conservative MP for North West Leicestershire Andrew Bridgen and former Conservative Cabinet Minister David Davis. The numerous parties that took place in Downing Street when the rest of Britain was following rules show that Mr Johnson has lost the moral authority to rule.

"We are facing a cost of living crisis. People here in Leicestershire are facing a rise in National Insurance this spring, thousands have had a £20 a week reduction in Universal Credit, people's Income Tax will effectively go up as the Income Tax threshold is frozen, pensioners will be hit by the suspending of the Triple lock on pensions. People will be facing the highest inflation and Interest rates in decades, meaning prices rising and Mortgage payments going up. Whilst spiralling fuel bills will see people facing fuel bill rises of over £600 from this spring.

"At this incredibly difficult, uncertain and worrying time financially people need a Prime Minister who commands respect, authority and credibility. Boris Johnson has lost them all. For the good of people facing a tough time financially it's essential this failed Prime Minister goes as soon as possible."

The motion was seconded by Lib Dem Councillor for Newbold Verdon and Desford with Peckleton Mark Sheppard-Bools who said " In any other time with any other Prime Minister this motion would not have been needed to be brought to this council such is the strength of feeling among the residents we represent. Importantly this strength of feeling crosses the political spectrum and many of the conversations I have had with residents on this issue would have voted for the Conservative party and Boris Johnson in 2019.

"His actions during a global pandemic have fallen far below the expected level of the Prime Minister of this country and for him to cling on and refuse to accept that responsibility given to him by the people shows just how unsuitable he is to hold that position."

A number of councillors gave emotional contributions on how the pandemic affected friends and family. Conservative Councillors walked out of the debate refusing to participate.
