Hinckley Councillor backs Independent Retailer Month
July is the UK's Independent Retailer Month, and Hinckley County Councillor Michael Mullaney is calling on local residents to show their support.
Cllr Michael Mullaney said "We have a wide selection of Independent Retailers here in Hinckley. I've worked with local business groups like Love Hinckley which represent Independent Retailers in the town and they are incredibly enthusiastic about the many Independent retailers we have here.
"Independent Retailers month gives us the perfect opportunity to back the many local independent retailers we have in our town."
July marks the UK's fourth independent retailer month, which aims to raise awareness of thousands of local businesses and increase footfall into town and village centres, helping retailers to stay open for business, and to reduce the number of empty shops on the high street.
In a recent research project completed for The Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) about the value of a £1 spent locally, they discovered that for every £1 spent locally around 50p - 70p of that money recirculates back into the local economy. For the same £1 spent out of town or online only 5p trickles back to the local community.
Supporting independent retailers month is one of Hinckley's newest shopkeepers, Cathy Phayres, who recently opened her shop the "Buttercream Bakery" on King Street in Hinckley. Supporting the campaign Cathy said "I'm really pleased to be supporting this campaign especially being new to business. I feel it important to support local independent businesses as these are the future of our town."
