Hinckley holds successful party conference

24 Oct 2022

The Liberal Democrats held their East Midlands regional conference in Hinckley. It was a well attended event with party members from across the region attending. Guest speakers included Baroness Liz Barker. The Lib Dems national party conference was cancelled as a mark of respect to the late Queen Elizabeth the Second as it was due during the week of her funeral.

The Regional Conference was therefore the opportunity for members to meet and discuss the policies and ideas that can improve the lives of people in the East Midlands.

Delivering a keynote speech was leader of Leicestershire Lib Dem County Councillors Michael Mullaney. Michael said "People here in Hinckley, the East Midlands and the rest of Britain need real help now from the government. The government is instead letting them down, with mortgage costs rocketing following the disastrous Tory mini-budget and sadly big spending cuts to vital services coming.

"Speaking to many people locally the state of the NHS is a key issue. Liberal Democrats are putting forward plans to improve GP waiting times, which are far too long at the moment, reduce the shockingly long ambulance waiting times and improve access to NHS dentists.

"Meanwhile the chaotic Tory government fight amongst themselves at a time when people are looking to government more than ever to support them through these tough times."

Leader of Hinckley and Bosworth Council Stuart Bray opened the event. He outlined some of the achievements of the Lib Dem administration locally.

Stuart said "On economic development, climate change, housing and helping people through the covid and cost of living crisis the Lib Dems here in Hinckley and Bosworth have delivered for local people.

"We have set one of the lowest Council Tax levels in England too. In contrast to the shambles and infighting we are seeing under the Conservatives, we just get on and deliver for local people. This is why people here see us, and not Labour, as the sensible alternative to the Tories"
