Housing Councillor meets with Shelter to discuss local housing plans

Hinckley and Bosworth's Councillor responsible for Housing Michael Mullaney (Lib Dem: Hinckley Trinity) met with housing and homelessness charity Shelter, at the Liberal Democrats Annual Conference to discuss housing issues affecting the area.

Michael Mullaney said "It was good to meet up with Shelter to discuss housing issues locally. Every two minutes someone in Britain faces losing their home so it really is a crucial issue for many people.

"I took the opportunity to talk to Shelter about some of the plans we have been taking up locally. These include the building of new Council Homes, in Alexander Gardens, Hinckley, the first Council Houses built in the Borough for over twenty years. The work being done to bring empty homes back into use was also discussed. The local housing team has achieved funding to bring 40 empty homes in the Borough back into use.

"We also discussed the work the Council has done to support the building of affordable homes in Carlton, Leicestershire. The local Parish Councils, Carlton and Shackerstone identified with their communities the need for more affordable housing in the area and the Borough worked with the parishes and others to secure funding for eleven affordable homes.

"I also raised the work the Borough has done with "Mortgage Rescue" helping prevent homelessness by intervening when people start struggling to pay their mortgages, the Council recently secured £50,000 worth of grants to carry on this work, the most awarded to any council in the County."
