Lib Dems will invest £34million to protect school funding in Leicestershire

The Liberal Democrats have announced they will invest £34 million more in schools and colleges in Leicestershire over the next parliament.

The funding for Leicestershire would reverse cuts to frontline school and college budgets, protect per pupil funding in real terms and ensure no school loses out from changes to funding arrangements.

£23million of the funding would be spent on protecting the Pupil Premium, introduced by the Liberal Democrats to help the most disadvantaged children.

Lib Dem parliamentary candidate for Bosworth, Councillor Michael Mullaney said

"Children in Hinckley and Bosworth are being taught in overcrowded classes by overworked teachers - but Theresa May doesn't care.

"Under the Conservatives, funding per pupil is set to see the biggest cuts in a generation, while billions of pounds are being spent on divisive plans to expand grammars and free schools.

"This extra £34million of funding would ensure no school and no child loses out. Here in Leicestershire we have some of the lowest education funding in Britain. Yet despite electing numerous Tory MPs and councils it makes no difference. Electing a Lib Dem MP in Bosworth will cause the Tories the shock they need to wake them up and start delivering for Leicestershire after years of our schools being underfunded.

"We will reverse crippling Conservative cuts to school budgets and invest to ensure every child has the opportunity to succeed.

"Under the cuts which will come into place with the Conservatives' current proposals it has been calculated by the Heads and others that most schools will lose out in a few years time. For example, it's estimated Battling Brook Primary School in Hinckley will lose £153,930 every year, £253 per pupil and 4 teachers. Congerstone Primary School which is one of the smallest schools is estimated to lose £59,420, £464 per pupil and 2 teachers.

"If these proposals go through it will have a devastating impact on the education of every child at school or about to start school. We will continue to campaign at every level against these proposals and would like to hear from people who share these concerns."

Liberal Democrat Leader Tim Farron said:

"A landslide for the Conservatives would allow Theresa May to take parents across the country for granted and cut our schools to the bone.

"Only the Liberal Democrats can provide the strong opposition Britain needs to stand up for Bosworth.

"Vote for the Liberal Democrats and you can change Britain's future."
