Local liberal Democrats are fighting Conservative County Council plans to close local care homes

Local Liberal Democrats have launched a campaign to save local care homes.

Conservative run Leicestershire county council are threatening to close ten care homes for elderly people in Leicestershire, including The Limes in Hinckley and Harvey House in Barwell.

The County Council have announced they will try to sell the care homes, but if they fail they will consider closing them.

Michael Mullaney Liberal Democrat parliamentary spokesman for Hinckley and Bosworth said "The county council's own consultations show that the care homes are popular with residents, families and staff. When the county council have tried to sell them before they have failed. If they fail to sell them again they say they may well close them.

"It is callous of Tory bosses at the county council to consider closing care homes, forcing elderly and often infirm people out of their homes.

"I and the local Lib Dems will be collecting petitions opposing the care home closures."

The petition can be signed online at http://campaigns.libdems.org.uk/saveourcarehomes
