Liberal Democrats working to reduce energy bills
A local Liberal Democrat has welcomed news that action is to be taken to tackle rising energy bills.
Millions of people are facing increasing energy bills but the confusing number of different tariffs mean the best deal is difficult to find. To help people make the right choices, Liberal Democrat Leader and Deputy Prime Minister, Nick Clegg has announced a landmark deal with the major energy suppliers so they let people know every year what the cheapest deal is.
Already, Liberal Democrats have taken action to reduce bills by increasing insulation, with hundreds of homes in Hinckley and Bosworth insulated at no extra cost to the home owners and more expected to receive help under the Green Deal.
Commenting, Cllr Michael Mullaney (Lib Dem Hinckley, Trinity)said:
"Rising energy prices and a boom in the number of tariffs have left people confused and paying more than they should. That is why Liberal Democrats have made the energy companies take responsibility and let people know how to knock the bills down.
"As a Liberal Democrat, I know this is only the first step. Our reliance on dwindling supplies of oil and gas, mostly from volatile regions, is bad for consumers and bad for our energy security.
"That is why we're ensuring energy companies insulate millions of homes and businesses at no extra cost to the owners.
"Already hundreds of homes in Hinckley and Bosworth have received help and the Liberal Democrat 'Green Deal' will increase this number rapidly, starting this autumn.
"With the Green Deal, Liberal Democrats are doing the right thing for the environment, household budgets and the economy. Not only does this mean lower energy bills for everyone but this huge investment will create green jobs and investment which leave a lasting legacy."
