Local Councillor calls for Scrapping of the “Bedroom Tax” at national conference
Leicestershire County Councillor Michael Mullaney, called for the scrapping of the Spare room supplement or "Bedroom Tax" during a debate at the party's national conference in Glasgow.
Cllr Mullaney who is the Lib Dems parliamentary spokesman for Bosworth said "Due to years of governments, Labour and Conservative stopping building Council Houses there aren't other Council Houses for people hit by the "Bedroom Tax" to move into.
"Most of those hit by the bedroom tax are disabled people. It is an unfair tax and it should be scrapped. When you take into account all the extra bureaucracy and costs created by the Bedroom Tax it is causing a lot of pain without even saving much money.
"Lib Dem run Hinckley and Bosworth Borough Council are building the first Council Houses in our area for decades but these will take time to build.
"In the meantime there are discretionary housing payments available for people hit by the Bedroom Tax, if people think they qualify I would urge them to contact the Borough Council. on 01455 238141
"The motion opposing the Bedroom Tax was supported overwhelmingly at the Lib Dem conference and I hope this is the beginning of the end of the Bedroom Tax"
