Opposition to boundary changes welcomed

A local Liberal Democrat Councillor has welcomed news that his party will be opposing plans to change local boundaries.

Leader of the Liberal Democrats Nick Clegg has said his party will vote in parliament against planned boundary changes.

Cllr Michael Mullaney (Lib Dem, Hinckley Trinity) supported the move saying "This round of boundary changes was a real dogs breakfast.

"Local community ties were completely ignored in the plans for Bosworth.

"If the plans for our area, supported by local Conservatives, went through it would mean that Hinckley was split from Burbage and Barwell was split from Earl Shilton.

"Anyone with a shred of local knowledge knows that when drawing up a local constituency, Hinckley and Burbage and Barwell and Earl Shilton should go together.

"Things were even worse for the neighbouring North West Leicestershire who were going to be merged with part of Nottinghamshire, not even respecting county boundaries.

"I'm glad that Lib Dems in parliament will oppose these boundary change plans which, if they were passed, would split up our community and many others across the country."
