Plans to abolish Hinckley and Bosworth opposed by Lib Dems

Plans by the Tory leader of Leicestershire county council Nick Rushton to abolish all local Boroughs including Hinckley and Bosworth and replace them with one Unitary authority for Leicestershire have been condemned by a leading Liberal Democrat.

Hinckley County Councillor and Leicestershire Lib Dem Finance spokesman Cllr Michael Mullaney said "These plans would see areas like Hinckley miss out. They will lead to massive centralisation of decision making in the county and areas like Hinckley and Burbage on the edge of the county are likely to be overlooked. It's particularly concerning if control over planning applications end up with the County Council given we are expected to take so much development here without the infrastructure needed being delivered by government.

"This is clearly a power grab by the Tory County Council bosses to scrap areas like Hinckley and Bosworth and Oadby and Wisgston that haven't voted Conservative. The County Council would be much better placed if they continued to press their Tory government to finally deliver the fair funding our area deserves. For too long Leicestershire has been at the back of the queue for funding under the Tories".
