Public meeting calls for Children’s Centres to be saved
A public meeting organised by Leicestershire County Council held at the Greentowers Centre in Hinckley heard parents and campaigners call for 24 threatened Sure Start Children's Centres to be saved.
Amongst those attending was the local County Councillor Michael Mullaney (Lib Dem Hinckley De Montfort) Michael said "The Sure Start Children's Centres do vital work in our communities. They support children and families at the most important time, in the child's early years.
"It will be devastating to see two thirds of these centres close if the Tory County Councils plans go ahead.
"In particular residents were concerned about the proposal to close Barwell's Sure Start. The Barwell Sure Start is a well used local facility in Barwell. There are high levels of child poverty in Barwell, the village has also seen its library close recently. To have the Sure Start Centre close as well will be a shattering blow to the Barwell community.
"I hope the County Council changes it's mind, listens to the strong views expressed at the meeting and keeps the Sure Start Children's Centres open."
