Queen's speech must include Iraq Inquiry bill- Hinckley and Bosworth Liberal Democrats

2 Dec 2008

Local Liberal Democrats are calling on the government to include an Iraq Inquiry Bill in this Wednesday's Queen's speech.

The call comes after the publication of the Information Commissioner's opinion that minutes from a Cabinet meeting on the decision to invade Iraq 'proved the absence of sufficient discussion'.

Liberal Democrat Parliamentary Spokesman for Bosworth, Michael Mullaney said:

"Public confirmation of Clare Short's claim that the Cabinet was not allowed to discuss properly the Attorney General's advice is a damning indictment of Blair, Brown and the whole Labour leadership who sat round that table.

"The Information Commissioner has been vindicated: there is a clear public interest for these minutes to be released.

"Not to consider such a critical piece of legal advice on the eve of a major war makes a total mockery of Cabinet Government. Tony Blair broke the unwritten rules of our constitution, yet nothing has been done by Gordon Brown to prevent this happening again.

"The case for a public inquiry has been strengthened yet again. Gordon Brown must announce a bill to provide for this in this week's Queen's Speech."
