Revealed: 37,247 crimes went unsolved last year in Leicestershire
Leicestershire Police closed over 37,000 cases last year without even identifying a suspect, new analysis by the Liberal Democrats has revealed.
The party's analysis of new Home Office figures has found that, of the 96,104 offences committed between April 2021 and March 2022 37,247 were unsolved.
This means a staggering 38.76% of crimes in Leicestershire were unsolved.
Liberal Democrat leader of the opposition on Leicestershire County Council Michael Mullaney reacted to the findings saying:
"The Government has neglected Police Forces for far too long. They should be giving the forces the resources they need to make sure that every crime is investigated properly
"These awful figures show criminals are getting away with victimising people on an industrial scale. The Conservative party love to talk tough on crime, but they can't even get the basics right.
"Leicestershire Liberal Democrats are calling for a return to proper community policing, where officers are visible, trusted and focused on cutting crime.
"Our local Police work incredibly hard to try and keep our area safe. Like many other services our Police Force in Leicestershire is funded well below the national average. The Government should give our Police force the resources they need to make sure that every crime is investigated.
"We must reverse years of Conservative neglect that have made our communities less safe and let far too many criminals get away with it. On this issue our area has sadly been let down by a Conservative government that continues to take our area for granted."
