A Lib Dem motion has been put to be debated at the Leicestershire County Council meeting on September 25th calling for the government to change its mind and drop its plans to scrap the Winter Fuel Payments for the bulk of pensioners.

Proposing the motion is the leader of the opposition, Lib Dem Cllr Michael Mullaney who said “ I have been contacted by many pensioners in Leicestershire who are extremely worried about losing their Winter Fuel Payments. The government plans will see an astonishing 92.5% of pensioners in Leicestershire lose their Winter Fuel Payments. This will include many pensioners who are struggling. This is especially bad as energy prices are due to rise again soon.

“I recently met with the Head of Age UK Leicestershire who explained how many pensioners in the County who face losing their Winter Fuel Payments are worried about making ends meet.

“Already Hinckley and Bosworth and many other Councils have called for the Winter Fuel Payments to be saved. I hope Leicestershire County Council can join them in supporting the campaign.

“The government must listen and drop their plans to remove the Winter Fuel Payments from so many pensioners. Some pensioners will face the awful choice of heating or eating if the government doesn’t change its position on this.”
