BBC licence fee should be set by independent body

At their Autumn Conference this weekend, the Liberal Democrats have agreed proposals that would see the BBC licence fee level set independently next year after government cuts forced the BBC to end free TV licences for most over-75s.

Lib Dems call for a rail fare freeze

The Liberal Democrats are calling for a freeze on rail fares. This following the announcement last month that the Retail Price Index rose by 1.6% in July, this is the figure usually used to calculate the increase in fares at the end of the year.

Anger as County Council chiefs push on with plan to abolish districts

There's been an angry reaction to the decision on Friday by the Leicestershire Conservative County Council's decision to press on with one Unitary authority for all of Leicestershire. This would mean the abolition of the seven district and Boroughs in the county. The meeting supported Tory council leader Nick Rushton writing to the government on behalf of the county council to signal to government their wish to press on with one unitary authority for the county.
